How to Choose an Independent Insurance Agent

Location

Something that seems obvious is the location of the agent. With internet agents more prevalent now than ever, you can have an agent anywhere in the state. But an insurance agent in Oklahoma City won’t necessarily understand your Southeastern Oklahoma insurance needs. Choosing an agent close to home means that agent is apart of the same community that you are. They live where you live and work where you work. Insurance needs vary greatly, so finding an agent that is close to you and understands your location can really go a long way.

Agent & Agency Type

Not all agents and agencies write the same type of polices, just as not all agents and agencies write through the same carriers. Some agents specialize in different areas of insurance, such as commercial, business or personal. Knowing what type of insurance you need and the type of insurance the agent offers is another important factor in deciding what agent you choose.

Ask Around

Your friends, your family and strangers on the street, nearly all of them have insurance. Asking them who their agent is and how their experience has been with them can really point you in the right direction.

Research the Agent and Agency

Check the agency’s website, the Oklahoma State Insurance Board, and how long they’ve been in business. Find out what type of insurance they offer and if they’ve ever had any disciplinary action against them.

Speak to the Agent

You’ve done your research, you’ve asked around and you finally found an agent that seems right for you! Now you can go and speak with them to get any more clarification you may need. Speaking directly to the agent can help you gauge if what they offer is something you need and if they are nice and knowledgeable.
