What Information is Needed for an Auto Quote
1. The Basics
Starting off is just your basic information, such as full name, date of birth, address and drivers license number. But some carriers need to dive a little bit deeper and will require a social security number. As independent agents, we realize how sensitive that information is, and we absolutely never give it out. It’s a very secure process, but the SSN is needed in most cases to run an “insurance score” which takes into account credit history as well as driving and claim history.
2. Vehicle Information
If you want comprehensive and collision coverage on your vehicle, then you’re going to need to have the VIN (vehicle identification number) ready to go. Most carriers base rates for different automobiles based on the “symbol” of the vehicle, and the symbol can only be identified through the VIN. If you want just a liability quote, then the VIN is still great to have ready, but just the year, make & model should do. The VIN however would be required if you were to write the policy.
3. Current Policy Information
If you’re currently insured with another carrier, then the information of that policy would be ideal for an accurate comparative quote. Things such as limits of liability, deductibles, uninsured motorist coverage & medical coverage will all be listed on your declaration page that you receive every renewal. Another bit of information that will be needed is the name of your current carrier and your policy number with them, so that the quoting carrier can check if any claims have been recently made.
4. Drivers & Named Insured’s
If you’re going to be the only one on the policy, then you don’t have to worry about information of others. But if you’ve got a spouse, a child; or a friend that will be consistently driving your vehicle, they need to be listed on the policy. The same information that is required for you is required for them, their names, dates of birth and license numbers. If you’ve got your name and someone else’s name on the title of your vehicle, then that other person needs to be listed on your policy as a named insured, and we will need their information as well.
Every carrier is different, some require more, and some require less. But it’s always a good idea to have these things handy if you’re looking to get the most accurate auto quote possible. Your independent agent can walk you through what they’ll need, and help you get a quote that’s right for you.
